The first building where Methodists worshipped was located about one mile north of the present church. This building was used until the outbreak of the "War of Yankee Agression" or Civil War when services were discontinued.

Following the War, a local Methodist preacher, Rev. James Hayes, began preaching once monthly in the old Primitive Baptist Church building. Under his leadership, a Methodist Church was organized which became part of the butler Charge, about 1886.

The Primitive Baptist building was used until the spring of 1883, when the present church was completed. The old church was used as a school building until 1896, when it was burned. The present church remained as one of the churches of the Butler Circuit. Union remained in that Charge until 1919 or 1920 when the Howard Charge was established. In 1932, the Howard Charge was discontinued, and Union again became part of the Butler Charge. In 1955, the Howard Charge was re-established with Union as one of six churches on the Charge.
