Howard United Methodist Charge
The Mission of the Churches of the Howard United Methodist charge is to exhort and enable persons to pursue scriptural holiness in all of its dimensions to the glory of
God in Christ.
Charing United Methodist Church is believed to have begun as Pleasant Hill Methodist Church. Pleasant Hill, a one-room log building, was located on the southwest side of Garrett Pond near the little community of Flem.
It is not known when Pleasant Hill was started as a church, but it is known that Flem community traces its roots back to around 1890, when a cotton gin was built in the vicinity. On November 4, 1908, the community of Flem was officially redesignated as Charing.
The Charing Methodist Church, according to some sources, was organized as early as 1886, but no official records exist to support this. It is well remembered that for many years the church building was utilized both as a worship center and as a school. Several older members can remember attendng classess in the present building.
In 1955, Charing Methodist Church became one of the six churches making up the Howard Charge--and remains so to this day. Prior to that time, Charing had, at various times, been part of the Buena Vista Circuit and part of the Mauk Circuit.
