The Howard Methodist Church was constituted in the year 1870. The need for a church in this small community of good people, scrub oak, and cheap sand was realized by the Rev. Robert Williamson who had an outside appointment while serving the Butler Charge.

Rev. Williamson and Judge W.D. Grace were the financial promoters for the building that was to be erected. The one acre of land on which the building was to be locted was donated by Marshall Patrick Brown, William Matthews, and Freeman Matthews.

The Howard Church has been placed for various periods of time on several charges. From 1903 to 1913, it was a part of the Geneva Charge. In June 1913, it was placed on the Mauk Charge. In 1919, it was placed on a charge with Wesley, Union, and Crowell Churches. However, this did not prove to be a successful, profitable charge, so in 1932, it was discontinued and Howard Church was placed on the Butler Charge. In 1955, it was combined with five other churches to form the Howard United Methodist Charge.

The Bible presently in use on the pulpit is inscribed: "Presented by Dr. James Griffith, M.D., as a donation to the M.E. Church South of Howard, Georgia, February 6, 1871." Two former members had the Bible rebound in 1953.
